The theme of my work is Nature and its contrasts, the tranquility and the drama, it's power and it's vulnerability, the scale and the minutae. The landscape provides these contrasts which become the subject, the dual nature of things. The work could be described as being poetic interpretations of landscape/seascape; landscapes taken as a metaphor for human emotion. I investigate spatial relationships within the landscapes/seascapes in terms of ways to describe the subject. Differing compositions strengthen the understanding of the place, and an abstraction exists in the selection of images from Nature which emphasize the contrast and the emotional response.
I use colour as a vehicle for this emotional response which could be said to be a ‘Fauvist’ colour technique. I explore the tension between the flatness of the picture surface and the illusionary depth within the frame. I enjoy the properties of paint as matter on canvas, yet also aim to create a sense of space and depth, juxtaposing the interplay between the materiality of paint and it's malleability in producing a space.
